Battleground Prussia - The Assault On Germany's Eastern Front 1944–45
Prit ButtarThe Soviet Army's intent from day one of its final series of campaigns had always been about taking revenge for the horror that the Nazis had wreaked on their people over the years, and the discovery of the Nazi's sustained and systematic abuses of Eastern Front POWs as well as the other camps only added impetus to such feelings of long overdue retribution. By its end millions of people were either killed outright or missing, a large majority of which were unarmed non combatants - some of whom were killed by their own side as examples to ensure that others continued to fight right upto the bitter end. The Soviet ground forces and supporting Air Force units were more than happy to oblige these 'die hard Nazi believers' wishes to die in 'glorious battle' by producing a conflict of implacable savagery and brutality.
From the great battles that marked the Soviet conquest of Prussia's Eastern and Western territories to the final surrender upon the estuary of the Vistula, this history recounts in chilling and sometimes graphic detail the desperate struggles of everyone trying to survive. These brutal campaigns are brought vividly to life by a combination of previously untold testimony, photographs and astute strategic analysis recognising a conflict of unprecedented horror and suffering that has been overlooked for far too long.
This is a reissue of the award winning Author Prit Buttar's first ever non-fiction military history release which he originally completed back in 2012 after writing an earlier novel (now out of print and unavailable). He was encouraged to do so by one of his patients who survived this period of the war in Germany, before going onto emigrate to the UK.
After completing his studies and going onto earn his Medical degree at Oxford University, the Author enlisted with the British Army and saw combat duty in his role as a Medical Officer/Doctor. At the end of his Army Service, he returned to civilian life as a GP (General Practitioner) firstly in the area of Bristol and then later at Abingdon, Oxfordshire. He also served and was an active member of the British Medical Association's G.P. Committee. Despite no longer practicing since retirement, he still appears from time to time on local and national TV and radio, speaking on a wide variety of medically related social issues, while continuing to contribute regular articles to sources within the professional medical press.
Now recognised as an established expert on the Eastern Front in the field of 20th-century military history, his previous books concentrate on this theatre of war almost exclusively, several of which have gone onto win awards and critical acclaim. As of 2022 He is currently researching two new histories, one on the battle of Leningrad and another on the activities of the Third Reich's mobile killing squads known as the 'Einsatzgruppen' which will detail their activitys on the Eastern Front in world war two.
The Author now lives with his Wife on a farm in semi retirement at Kirkcudbright Scotland, where his still an active social welfare campaigner and refugee advocate.
